Context
The hospital is a planned elective care hospital, with 10 beds, accepting planned and surgical admissions and outpatient and diagnostics patients. Consultants, patients and relatives need to be dealt with sensitively and efficiently in order to retain their custom.
Role Purpose
To ensure that standards of patients care are consistently maintained at all times in accordance with agreed operational policies as a skilled member of the nursing team
To promote and safeguard the well-being and interests of all patients, employees and visitors
To ensure that the highest standards of patient and customer care are maintained at all times
To support the smooth running of the ward, out-patient and diagnostics department
To assist senior staff in the management of the hospital
To provide effective leadership and management in their absence
Key Accountabilities & Output
Assess, implement and evaluate nursing care with an evidence based approach, providing a high standard of clinical and customer care to all patients
Assist with the creation and review of patient centered standards of care
Promote an environment receptive to change
Attend and participate in department meetings
Participate in the mentorship of HCA’s and new starters
Provide a supportive environment staff
Support colleagues and work co-operatively to promote good team morale on the ward
Identify areas for personal and professional development plus that of junior staff
Maintain and expand professional knowledge participating in nursing / hospital educational programs
Be able to initiate hospital emergency procedures
Assist in the provision of a clinical environment conducive to learning
Act as a professional and positive role model all to colleagues
Involve all staff in the clinical team
Adhere to nursing and hospital policies
Complete an orientation program for new staff
Effective communication with team members and other colleagues in the hospital
Understand how your actions impact on the marketing of the hospital
Respond to telephone calls appropriately
Resolve patient / customer concerns where possible and escalate issues if not resolved
Promote cost effective utilization of resources
Become competent in the use of the in-house computer system
Perform any other reasonable duties as required and requested by the line manager and other senior staff
Taking of blood samples as required
Post-operative dressings as required
Making appointments for radiology test as required
Chaperoning patients as required
Ensuring all charges are recorded and processed accurately and in a timely way
Support minor procedures i.e. ENT, dermatology and podiatry
Maintaining the consulting rooms and ensuring these are organized and welcoming to Consultants, patients and visitors
Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge / Qualities:
Registered Nurse with 2+ years post qualification experience
Presently working in a hospital environment – essential
Experience in a private hospital environment -desirable
Experience in mentoring colleagues and HCA’s Enthusiastic and committed, a team player, flexible, physically able to carry out the role, sensitive to patient needs
Personal and Professional Development
The post holder will:
Be responsible for their own professional development and revalidation, in line with the NMC/HCPC requirements.
Acquire new skills and knowledge to expand nursing practice. This will include computer skills and other initiatives to enhance patient focused care.
Participate in annual staff appraisal, staff development and in-service training activities.
Will be familiar with and work to PHG Policies and Guidance.
When representing the department, PHG or profession, the post holder will ensure that this is conducted in a professional manner.
Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing/operating theatre practice and participate in audit and nursing research.
Assist in the teaching and supervision of learners entering the department including Student Nurses/ ATOs/HCAs.
Assist the Team Leader/Nurse in Charge in ensuring that the Educational Environment is conducive to learning and work in conjunction with the appropriate training centres.
Monitor that training objectives are being met.
Assist in the Orientation/Induction Programmes for newly appointed staff, trainees and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Additional duties/responsibilities
The post holder will:
Act as a “link practitioner” for an area of clinical interest (i.e. for infection control, tissue viability) ensuring attendance at and contribution to relevant PHG meetings and responsible for ensuring dissemination of relevant information from these to all staff within the department.
Wear uniform at all times, in accordance with the uniform policy.
Interact with patients, consultants, visitors to the department, other members of the nursing team and managers in positive, supportive and co-operative ways.
Carry out such other reasonably related duties appropriate to the grade, as assigned by the Team leader for their area or nurse in charge/Duty Clinical Manager.
Be prepared to work across the specialities including day surgery, inpatient, out-patient and diagnostics (acquired skills allowing), if required to do so, to meet the needs of the service.
Be responsible for reporting their sick and annual leave in line with PHG policy.
